At Wilmot Cancer Institute of URMC

Non-profit exceeds five- year commitment one year early

 October 24, 2018 Rochester, NY

Adding Candles, Inc., a non-profit volunteer organization founded in 2015 to fund brain cancer research, announces that, in its first four years, it has raised $315,000 for brain cancer research at Wilmot Cancer Institute of URMC, exceeding its $300,000 five-year goal one year early.  After completing its fourth successful signature event, Adding Candles for a Cure, on October 11, 2018, this year the non-profit will donate $90,000 to Wilmot Cancer Institute of URMC.

“We’re thrilled at exceeding our five year commitment one year early,” reports Lois Warlick-Jarvie, president of Adding Candles. “There is a tremendous need to fund brain cancer research and we appreciate the tremendous support we’ve received from our local community.  We are most thankful to everyone who helped make this a success – sponsors, donors, volunteers, and attendees.  Our commitment to funding this research continues and we look forward to our 5th Adding Candles for a Cure in 2019.”

“Adding Candles has become an important source of funding for us,” notes Dr. Nimish Mohile, Associate Professor of Neurology and Division Chief of Neuro-Oncology at Wilmot Cancer Institute.  “Last year, for example, we were able to fund two innovative research projects, one of which is successfully looking at ways to improve surgery on brain tumors and another that will test a new treatment regimen in glioblastoma.  It allows us to also research ways to improve quality of life in brain tumor patients and for caregivers. Thanks to Adding Candles,” he adds, “We are able to leverage donations into larger grants from the National Cancer Institute and FDA.  We are thankful to live in a community with such a strong commitment to this important cause.”

Adding Candles for a Cure, the signature event for the not-for profit organization Adding Candles, increased its 2015 results by 50 percent this year and will donate $75,000 to Wilmot Cancer Institute at URMC to benefit brain cancer research.  This is only the second year for the organization and the Adding Candles for a Cure event, held on September 29, 2016 at Oak Hill Country Club. Additionally, Adding Candles is committing to a total five-year goal of raising $300,000, including the first two year’s results.

“We are thrilled by the amazing response we’ve received for our efforts to bring awareness of brain cancer and to support local research,” notes Lois Warlick-Jarvie, Adding Candles president.  “Too many families are impacted by brain cancer and we know that research is dramatically underfunded.  The success of our fundraising efforts clearly indicates that we have strong support for this cause and we now have the confidence to make a full commitment to Wilmot Cancer Institute and their researchers as they work to defeat this devastating disease.  We are grateful to all who played a role in this success.”

“A multi-year pledge helps leverage larger grants because it shows commitment to other funders,” commented Dr. Nimish Mohile, Associate Professor, Division of Neuro-Oncology at Wilmot Cancer Institute.  “It can enable longer term planning,” he explained, “for example by expanding staff and infrastructure for clinical trials.”  The Neuro-Oncology division currently offers 15 clinical trials for patients with all types of primary brain tumors and is pursuing new clinical trials and numerous studies aimed at improving the quality of life and patients and caregivers.  “We are grateful to Adding Candles for their dedication and efforts in fighting brain cancer,” Mohile added.
